The central market of Florence, (Mercato centrale di Firenze), dating back to the 19th century when Florence was the capital of Italy. The population growth made the construction of the big market building a necessity.
Outside, the San Lorenzo Market specializes in clothing, leathers goods and jackets, gifts and souvenirs. Florence is famous about its leather goods.
Inside the building with the glass roof, on the first floor there were sellers of fish and meat, that looked like they were selling wholesale to stores and restaurants. If you take up the stairs to the upper floor with the high huge glass roof you can see smaller retail shops.
You can find meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, cheese, truffle products, pastries and deli products. There is even a cookery school inside.
We went there close to the white truffle season. I saw some of the biggest truffles. You can buy a sandwhich and put some inside, truffle infused oil, truffle butter etc.
Fish, rather expensive.
